About
You’re probably wondering…”Who is Ruthie Pearl?”
Ruthie Pearl was my grandmother who passed away at almost 91 years old in the summer of 2009. For 45 years, she toiled away at Ala-Tex (Alabama Textiles) making men’s shirts and other clothing. As a little girl, all my doll clothes were made from pinstriped and checked cotton poplin that she brought home from the factory.
During my summers and afternoons spent with Ruthie Pearl, I learned how to create all kinds of things – from pillowcase nighties to bows and arrows out of branches from trees in the yard. And when I recently was looking for a new industrial sewing machine, the saleslady suspiciously asked, “Do you know how to operate one of those?”
To which I replied…
“I’ve been sewing on one of these since I was 5.”
When I’m not making things, I’m taking care of my little girl, Harper. Wait, reverse that…when I’m not taking care of my little girl, or taking care of the house, I’m making things. I live in Salt Lake City with my husband (Scott), Harper, and our two cats (Wonton and Chopstick). We enjoy traveling, rock climbing/bouldering, learning foreign languages, making fun of passersby on our busy city street, arguing politics and surfing for new Pandora stations.
