My Nine-Month-Old Toddler (Almost!)

Harper turned nine-months-old on March 5. I am in absolute amazement at the little girl she’s becoming.

A few updates:

She finally figured out how to crawl. It is adorable. She puts one leg out to the side to propel herself in the right direction (a new thing, since previously she always went backwards and ended up wedged under the coffee table), and her arms do most of the work. She sounds particularly clumsy when she’s clomping around on the hardwood floor.

She can stand by herself for a few seconds at a time. She doesn’t quite have the courage to attempt any steps by herself, but BOY does she love to hold onto my fingers and walk around the house…over…and over…and over. We are going to have our hands full when this little one starts walking! And I don’t think it will be long…

We finally had to invest in some babyproofing items. Okay, one babyproofing item – a gate. I decided to start with just one so I can put her in her room when I am showering or doing the laundry in the basement. Her room isn’t completely void of Harper hazards, but it’s better than the other rooms in the house. I’m working on making it 100% safe for her. If I leave her in the living room, she inevitably finds whatever is super dangerous and potentially poisonous. She wants to pull up on the plant stand (which wobbles like it will fall over on top of her) or eat cat litter. You know, really awesome things for a little baby to do.

She has her first bad cold. She had one a few months ago, but it went away in three days. This time, she has the cough. The wheezing. The incessant snot bubbles. The fever (not too high though – and it was only one night). The sleepless nights. It’s been tough, but she’s pretty much been her happy self through the whole thing. Even when I took her to Instacare the other night in a semi-panic, she was waving at everyone and babbling away. According to the doctor, she has either a cold or early bronchialitis. It’s one of those watch-and-wait illnesses. There’s not much we can do except make her as comfortable as possible and keep an eye on things to make sure they don’t get worse. Oh, and since it’s viral, we’ve been avoiding activities involving other babies. She misses her friends. ;)

She has four teeth. The top two came through right at her 9-month birthday. She didn’t make a huge fuss about it, but she has started this very annoying tooth scraping thing. She scrapes the top teeth against the bottom teeth…and if you’ve never experienced this phenomenon from a baby or toddler, I will tell you it is a million times worse than any other annoying sound you’ve ever heard. It puts fingernails on the chalkboard to shame. She has also bitten me a few times (fingers, nipples, etc.) which is never fun, but she seems to be getting the hang of having teeth now. I haven’t let out any blood-curdling screams in a few days.

She loves cuddling. In the morning, she will bury her head into the space between my head and chest, and she will lie there like that making little Harper noises. She also does this when she gets tired. For a while, she hated being carried in her Boba Wrap, but lately she has been loving it. I especially love putting her in it while shopping. If she gets tired, she will put her head on my chest and fall asleep for a nice, long nap. I am able to get things done while kissing her little head over and over. I absolutely adore this child.

She is sleeping through the night again, and IN HER CRIB. Oh this has been heavenly. We stuck with the cry-it-out method, and she now goes to sleep without much of a fuss. While she’s been sick, she’s been a little more needy at night…and I have obliged her. But once she’s better, I expect she will be back to her 10-hour nights.

Speaking of nights, I had gotten a little lax on my cloth diapering for the last few months. (GASP!) I was still using prefolds/covers throughout the day, but since she was coming into my bed a lot at night, I was putting disposables on her for sleeping. Now that she has gone back to sleeping through the night (for the most part), I have switched her back to cloth. We may have to adjust her routine now that she’s getting bigger (and wetting more!), but I trust that we can find a solution that works for us.

She claps. And gives high-fives. And waves hello and goodbye (at everything and everyone). And I think she even signed “milk” the other day. It’s interesting to see that she knows when these things are appropriate – for example, if I say “Good Job!” or “Yay!”, she will start clapping. And in the morning, when Wonton jumps up on the bed, she waves “Hello!” to him. Precious.

She is still almost exclusively breastfed. I give her solids whenever we’re eating something that’s appropriate for her, but we don’t push it. She pretty much loves everything we’ve given her, and she hasn’t had any digestive/allergy problems. However, I feel confident that breast milk is all she really needs until about a year-old. I’ll be more diligent about preparing her structured meals then. Call me lazy, but it really is nice not having to puree and specially prepare food for her. Delaying solids has been really nice because now, she has teeth. She can chew (and she knows how – a problem that I hear some babies have who are introduced to pureed food early-on) – we just give her small bites that she can easily handle.

I think that’s about it! Enjoy the photos. Oh, and expect a lot more now that the temperatures are heating up. I anticipate that we’ll be spending many hours at the park and out-and-about in the new few months!

PS – The pants Harper is wearing in the photos in this post are some of the prototypes for my Baby Got Back sewing pattern for cloth-diapered babies!!! I am getting SO CLOSE to being ready to roll out this pattern. I gotta tell you – pattern making isn’t anywhere near as glamorous as one would think. Sewing the same thing over and over 30 times or so = NO FUN! But it will be worth it soon! :)

A Quick Update…

by Lauren on March 10, 2012

We are still alive.

I had this realization the other day. Perhaps if I stopped blogging about how I never have time to get anything done, I might actually have time to get something done. I’ve been so focused on blogging about knitting, blogging about sewing, blogging about designing things, etc. etc., that I haven’t had time to actually DO THINGS.

So, I’m taking a breather.

And I’m pretty sure we’re going to be a lot happier for it.

High on Thrifting!

Harper and I go thrifting A LOT…so when I say I just had the best day EVER of thrifting, that is saying…well, A LOT. We really didn’t get that much stuff, but I guess it’s the little things that make all the difference. I came home so high from Deseret Industries, I couldn’t wait for her to take a nap so I could pour through my finds! Check these out!

Scarf for $2. I love the print SO much, and it’s big and soft and scrumptious.

Six balls of yarn for $.50 each. I see yarn at the thrift store all the time, but it’s usually a bunch of acrylic crap. THESE babies are alpaca, wool and cotton! Total score! And there’s actually enough of each of them to make something.

A women’s XL, metallic, gold t-shirt for $5. I have been searching for one of these to make Harper some leggings with my new Baby Got Back pattern I’ll be rolling out soon. These are going to be such a steezefest!!

An absolutely awesome, AWESOME book for $2. Dated 1960, this book contains some of the best interior photos I’ve ever seen. The funniest thing about it is that many of them could have come straight off the pages of a current magazine. (The photo above the post headline also came from this book.) Just check these out:

That kitchen is so modern…so sleek…so beautiful! I love it!

Just…wow. I love the high ceilings and the pops of color. The wall cabinets are also pretty incredible.

I think it’s funny how timeless most of the styles in this book are.

Taxidermy as decoration! Love it. Hahaha.

This is perhaps my favorite page in the whole book. I would LOVE for Harper to have a playroom like this! It looks like a page out of the IKEA catalog!

These colors are just fabulous.

I wonder if I can put one of these into my 1913 bungalow? ;)

Love these colors, too.

Next, I got the book “Modern Furnishings for the Home, Volume 2″ for $2. This book is black and white but is basically a catalog of late 1950s, modern furnishings. OMG, right?! There is even a section for FABRIC!!! Which, on a slightly off-topic note, I might be delving back into a little fabric design soon (more about that later)… Here are some pics:

And finally, I got this book about colors in oil painting. I think it was $.50, and I can’t find a date on it. It has to be from around the same time as the other books…or perhaps a little later.

I’m not sure what drew me to this book… Oh yeah I am! THE COLORS! They are fabulous – so retro, so rich… Love them!

These are items that I didn’t purchase, but I took photos with my iPhone since they were too good to ignore:

So yeah. I got a whole lot of randomness today, but it was exactly what I was looking for. I set out for design inspiration (sewing, knitting, fabric design, whatever), and I got exactly that.

After I got through all this stuff and was totally overflowing with creativity, I decided to log in to my old Spoonflower account since my interest in fabric design has been surfacing again. MUCH to my surprise, a couple designs I uploaded three years ago have been selling! Ha! The account was attached to an old email, so I had no idea. I have a nice little credit sitting there just waiting to be used on swatches for my new fabric designs. I think it was a sign.

AAAAAAAhhhh, all good things. :)

(It helps that Harper is sleeping through the night again. My sleep deficit is fading, slowly…)

Post image for Crying it out…and other madness.

Crying it out…and other madness.

by Lauren on February 27, 2012

So, a lot’s been going on in the last couple weeks here at the Dahl house…

First, I am cranking along on the design of my sewing pattern for cloth-diapered baby pants – The Baby Got Back Leggings. They are turning out really stinking cute, and I’m super excited. Harper wore one of the prototypes today to test them out, and they worked brilliantly. Plus, she looked adorable in them.

I hope to have the pattern done by the end of March…maybe sooner. I’m currently recruiting pattern testers, so if you’re interested, sign up here.

We had Scott’s parents in town all of last week, and Harper had the time of her life. They got her the Evenflo Triple Fun Jungle Exersaucer for an early birthday gift, and she has been going to town in that thing. I swear, girl’s gonna be walking in no time. Meanwhile, she has been practicing her crawling skills like a champ. I’m just not sure if she’s ever going to get those little legs out from under her so she can go forward instead of backward. We keep finding her under the coffee table…it’s sad and cute at the same time.

Harper also has two more teeth JUST ABOUT to pop through on top. She is nomming on everything and loving it. I have only had to give her acetaminophen one time when she was particularly fussy, so overall, this has been a pretty easy teething experience.

Speaking of teeth, I went in to the dentist last week for a cleaning and emerged four hours later with laser gum surgery, a veneer removal/bone removal/gingivectomy and stitches. It’s always awesome when that happens, right?! It’s been a long time coming, I guess. First, they did a laser treatment on all my gums since I’ve been having some problems with them since pregnancy. (Ladies, don’t let morning sickness keep you from flossing! Take it from me, pregnancy mouth is real!)

Next, they removed an old veneer that I’d had about 8 or 9 years. It has caused gum inflammation since I had it put in, and even though I’d done all the suggested treatments (more flossing, more brushing around the veneer, rinses, surgical gum removal, etc.), nothing was working. You can see in some of my photos that my second-from-the-middle, top-jaw, left-side tooth looks stumpy and weird. Yep, that’s the one. To make matters worse, the matching tooth on the opposite side is actually an implant (my teeth are seriously all jacked up – sorry Harper), so it looks much taller than the veneered one.

(Yes, I know you wanted to see that.)

Anyway, long story short…they removed that veneer and ultimately cut away more gum AND bone so it will more closely match the implant side when done. Hopefully removing all that extra tissue will also put an end to the inflammation issues. I now have two stitches above the tooth and a temporary crown that will be replace once everything heals. In the meantime, Scott says the stitches make me look like I have a big wad of chew in that side of my mouth.

Well, I am from Alabama, I say.

(In other words, no smiling photos for the next week or two.)

SO. Crying it out. Yes, that…

Before I had Harper, and back when she slept through the night with no issues, I was one of those people who posted stuff on Facebook about how brutal letting your baby cry herself to sleep was. My friends with babies her age would send me emails demanding that I give them advice on how to get their babies to sleep through the night since, well, Harper was just so damn good at it.

Ha.

HA.

HA!

That all ended at 6 months. I am not sure what happened, but somehow Harper figured out she could refuse to sleep in her crib FOR NAPS OR AT NIGHT, and I would bring her to bed with me to cuddle and nurse. All. Night. Long. And Scott, of course, was relegated to the guest bedroom. Perhaps it was teething or being sick for a few days or something…who knows…but it was like a ticking time bomb went off.

We tried co-sleeping as our official arrangement for a while, but honestly, I hated it. I LOVED (and miss) feeling Harper’s warm skin and waking up to her precious little face, but I HATED the neck aches, the back aches, my MIA husband, my sore nipples from nursing her every two hours and the three-month sleep deficit from my ever-worsening sleep deprivation. I am certainly not an opponent of co-sleeping and wish that it worked for us, but it just didn’t. I already like to sleep on a diagonal, and having two taller-than-average people plus one flaily baby in one queen size bed simply ain’t feasible.

I read the “No Cry Sleep Solution.” I read through all the BabyCenter forums. I googled sleep training and tried every strategy I found. Nothing worked. I would get Harper to sleep and try to put her in her crib, and she’d immediately wake up. I tried sleeping next to her crib on an air mattress. I tried transferring her to the crib after she was sleep. NOTHING was working.

So finally, we took my mom’s (repeated) advice and let her cry it out.

BLASPHEMY! I know! PURE BLASPHEMY!

I am all granola and shit, and I just said the dreaded three words: crying it out. But I gotta tell you, it is working.

Tonight is night three, and it only took her seven minutes to fall asleep (last night, it took 20, and you don’t wanna know how long she wailed – or I wailed – on night one). She’s even been able to comfort herself back to sleep after waking. Last night, I think she woke up three times, whimpered a little, and fell back to sleep.

COLOSSAL WIN!!!!!

I’ve even gotten her back to napping in her crib during the day simply by rocking her a little longer after she unlatches from the boob (or walking around with her, etc.). If she starts crying when I put her down, I swoop her back up and rock a little longer. I keep trying that until she stays asleep. She has been napping around an hour twice a day – WHICH IS AWESOME – because now I can get some things done without worrying if she’s falling off my bed while I’m in the basement sewing.

Ahhhhh. So yes, crying it out. I wanted to say “MOM 1, ME 0,” but really, everyone wins because HOLY SHIT SHE IS SLEEPING RIGHT NOW and it’s not even 9pm.

Cha-ching!

So there. I said it. Crying it out worked for us. My whole body is celebrating. And honestly? Harper seems like a happier baby because of it. She’s getting a lot more sleep at night, and a happy momma makes a happy baby. :)

Finally, we went for the coldest walk of the year yesterday at Liberty Park and discovered that Harper is now big enough to swing by herself. Here’s one video of her with daddy and another one of her all by herself. I can’t believe she is growing up so fast.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it a million times again…I love that little girl. :)

The Shwin Skirt

The Shwin Skirt is Here!

by Lauren on February 27, 2012

A few months ago, I was surfing Pinterest and discovered the most adorable blog – ShwinandShwin.blogspot.com. Shauna, the author, showcases her amazing design and sewing skills on an almost daily basis. Her kids, Abbey and Jude, are the perfect models for her adorable creations! You absolutely must check it out.

After reading one of Shauna’s posts about how she’s more of a sewist (I really hate that word – can I please say seamstress?!) than a knitter, I thought, “Hey, I can knit! And Abbey is precious! I think I’ll design and knit her a skirt!” So, I reached out to Shauna, and she thought a collaborative project was a great idea.

The design and construction of this skirt went through several iterations, and I am so absolutely happy with how it turned out. Actually, the finished product is almost exactly what I’d originally envisioned…it’s funny how things often work out that way.

The Shwin Skirt is super easy-to-knit and has the following features:

  • A-line shape
  • Two optional pockets on the front (with buttons)
  • Pleated shaping at waist
  • Elastic casing waistband

The skirt pattern comes in sizes 12mos-4T. It’s knit in-the-round using a size 8 circular needle (24″ and 16″) and two skeins of Berroco Vintage (worsted weight). The pattern is perfect even for an advanced beginner – the only skills needed are casting on, knitting, purling, knitting two together, yarn over and casting off. Basic sewing skills are also needed, but I have photos in the pattern to help you long the way. (You can check out the pattern page on Ravelry here.)

Just look at how adorable it is on Abbey!

I’m sure you know a little girl who would look just adorable in The Shwin Skirt! You can purchase the pattern on Craftsy or on Ravelry for just $3.99 by clicking the button below.
As always, happy knitting!
